Council Tax Exemption Success

There's good news for letting agents and private landlords

The Horncastle News of 11th March tells us that in East Lindsey councillors agreed to extend the Council Tax exemption period from one month to two. Private landlord Paul Briggs headed up the fight in November last year to get a longer period of time for landlords and letting agents in East Lindsey to enable them to make a property ready for rental, without the added pressure of council tax costs, the exemption for which had been knocked down from 6 months to just one by East Lindsey District Council. After a number of local letting agencies, alongside a band of private landlords, came forward to oppose the decision, the district council finalised their budget on February 25th, during that time they accepted the proposal to extend the period for Vacant Propertty Relief from one to two months. This will take effect from April 1, 2016. Mr Paul Briggs said, "It's great to have the longer period we were lobbying for accepted. It is a sensible decision by the council and is good for all landlords in the East Lindsey."

We do hope other councils who have reduced the Vacant Property Relief period will also consider extending it again.
